Adults and children aged 12 and over take one 10 mg tablet once a day, with or without food. Children aged 6 to 11 take half a tablet twice a day or use the liquid. Take it at the same time each day through the season; it can be taken every day for as long as you have symptoms.
Who should check with us first
Cetirizine 10 mg tablets are not for children under 6, who need the liquid on a pharmacist's advice, and not for anyone with kidney failure needing dialysis. Check with us first if you have kidney problems, epilepsy, trouble passing urine or an enlarged prostate, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you find it makes you drowsy, in which case do not drive. Avoid alcohol, which increases any drowsiness.
Always read the label and the leaflet.

Cetirizine questions
Yes. Zirtek, Piriteze and Benadryl Allergy Liquid Release all contain cetirizine 10 mg, the same as the plain cetirizine tablets we sell. The generic tablets are the same medicine at the same dose.
It is classed as non-drowsy and most people are fine, but up to one in ten notice some drowsiness, more than with loratadine. If it affects you, take it in the evening or switch to loratadine or fexofenadine. Do not drive if you feel drowsy.
Yes. It is safe to take once a day for the whole hay fever season, and many people with year-round allergies take it for months. If you need it constantly for more than a few months, speak to a pharmacist or GP about whether a nasal spray would control things better.
They are equally effective for most people. Cetirizine tends to work slightly faster and can be a little more sedating; loratadine is the least likely to cause drowsiness. If one stops working for you, switching to the other often helps.
Cetirizine liquid is licensed from age 2 and the 10 mg tablets from age 6, at half a tablet twice a day for ages 6 to 11. Ask our pharmacists for the right dose for your child's age.
