How to use it
Adults and children over 12 take one or two 200 mg tablets up to three times a day, with food or milk, leaving at least four hours between doses. Do not take more than six tablets in 24 hours unless a pharmacist or doctor tells you to. Use the lowest dose that works for the shortest time. Adults should speak to us if they need it for more than ten days, and anyone aged 12 to 17 after more than three days.
Who should check with us first
Not for children under 12 in tablet form. Do not take ibuprofen if you have ever had a stomach ulcer or bleeding, severe heart failure, kidney or liver problems, or an allergic reaction to aspirin or another anti-inflammatory. Do not take it in pregnancy unless a doctor or pharmacist has advised it, and not at all from 20 weeks of pregnancy onwards. Check with our pharmacists if you have asthma, high blood pressure, are over 65, or take blood thinners, steroids, other anti-inflammatories or certain blood pressure tablets.
Always read the label and the leaflet.

Ibuprofen questions
Yes, for adults. They work in different ways and are safe to combine or alternate every few hours for pain that one alone does not control. Keep each within its own daily limit and check that no cold remedy or co-codamol you are taking already contains paracetamol.
Paracetamol is the safer first choice for most pain and fever. Ibuprofen works better where there is inflammation, such as a sprain, toothache, back pain or period pain. If you can take both, combining them gives the best relief.
Yes. Taking it with a meal, a snack or a glass of milk reduces the chance of stomach irritation. Do not take it on an empty stomach if you can avoid it, and do not drink heavily while using it.
Occasional use with a small amount of alcohol is not dangerous for most people, but both irritate the stomach lining and together raise the risk of bleeding. For a hangover, water and paracetamol are the gentler option.
Yes. Standard Nurofen tablets contain ibuprofen 200 mg, the same dose as the generic tablets we sell, and they work the same way. Nurofen Express and lysine versions may be absorbed a little faster but are otherwise the same medicine.
