Quick answer
A sore throat can be assessed at Medway Pharmacy under the NHS Pharmacy First service. Our pharmacist uses the FeverPAIN clinical scoring tool to assess severity, and can prescribe penicillin V or clarithromycin where appropriate — free on the NHS, for adults and children aged 5 and over, no GP needed.
A sore throat is one of the most common reasons people visit a pharmacy in the Medway towns. Most sore throats are caused by viral infections and resolve on their own within a week. However, for some patients — particularly those with a bacterial infection — antibiotic treatment can speed recovery and reduce the risk of complications such as quinsy.
Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, our pharmacist Emmanuella Torto-Doku can assess your sore throat using the validated FeverPAIN scoring tool, which measures the likelihood of a bacterial cause. If appropriate, she can supply antibiotics during the same consultation at no cost to you.
Whether you live in Gillingham, Chatham, Rochester, or anywhere across the Medway towns, you can walk into our pharmacy on Canterbury Street 7 days a week without an appointment. The consultation is private and typically takes 10–15 minutes.
The Pharmacy First sore throat pathway covers adults and children aged 5 years and over. It is not appropriate for patients with a known penicillin allergy who are also allergic to clarithromycin, those with severe immunosuppression, or patients where quinsy (peritonsillar abscess) is suspected — which requires same-day urgent GP assessment. Our pharmacist will take a full symptom history before prescribing.
Where a bacterial cause is likely based on the FeverPAIN score, our pharmacist can supply penicillin V (phenoxymethylpenicillin) as a first-line antibiotic, or clarithromycin for patients allergic to penicillin. Analgesics including ibuprofen and paracetamol are recommended for symptom relief. Throat lozenges containing benzydamine or lidocaine can also help. For low-risk scores, a safety-net approach is taken — a delayed prescription may be given to use only if symptoms do not improve.
Medway Pharmacy has been serving the Gillingham and wider Medway community for years from our base on Canterbury Street. Our pharmacist Emmanuella treats dozens of Pharmacy First consultations each month, including many sore throat cases. We are particularly well placed to serve patients from the Gillingham, Rainham, and Chatham areas who want prompt treatment without waiting for a GP appointment. Our extended hours — 7:30am to 10pm, 7 days a week — mean we are open when many GP surgeries are not.
Yes. The Pharmacy First service covers sore throat for adults and children aged 5 and over. The pharmacist uses the FeverPAIN clinical scoring tool to assess severity and can prescribe penicillin V or clarithromycin (for penicillin-allergic patients) where appropriate.
FeverPAIN assesses five factors: Fever in the last 24 hours, Purulence (pus on tonsils), Attend rapidly within 3 days, Inflamed tonsils, and No cough or coryza. A higher score indicates a bacterial cause is more likely and antibiotics may be appropriate.
Go to A&E if you have difficulty breathing, cannot swallow your own saliva, develop a muffled voice or drooling (possible epiglottitis), or show signs of sepsis.
